$30 – per half hour lesson ($100 for four weeks of half hour lessons)

$55 – per hour lesson ($180 for four weeks of hour long lessons)

Student Responsibilities :

  • Materials – Students are responsible for the purchase of their own books, instruments, and other materials needed for the lessons they are receiving. For beginning students I provide materials to gauge playing level. If you have questions, I am happy to assist in providing recommendations as to where instruments or materials can be purchased.
  • Practicing – Daily practice is ideal for all students. Students who maintain the recommended practicing time discussed during their weekly lessons are more likely to make consistent progress and enjoy taking lessons. Parents are also encouraged to be involved in their students practice. Taking the time to listen to your child play their weekly songs, or creating a set time for practicing in the students daily routine are good ways to become involved.
  • Attendance – Students are responsible for their time slot. If given at least 24 hours notice that a student is not available for their weekly lesson (or I am not available) I will do my best to reschedule the lesson or give a credit towards the next month of lessons. If I know I will not be available I will do my best to let you know at least two weeks in advance. I do not reimburse for missed lessons. Payment is required for all lessons wherein I was not notified of absence. Student Contracts- Students or parents of students being taught are to sign and hand in a contract with their first payment of lessons. This contract ensures that both the students and the parents understand the business arrangements of how these lessons will work.
  • Payment – is to be received by the first lesson of each month for the whole month ahead. I accept cash or checks (made out to Kyle Wernke). If payment is not received by the first lesson of the month (or every two weeks) there is an additional $10 late fee.

Kyle is an effective composition teacher. His repertoire and knowledge set are enormous and his teaching is approachable and personalized.

Materials

A saxophonist’s setup is a very personal combination of materials that creates that player’s signature sound. I have some some suggested materials to get beginning players started.

My Setup

  • Saxophone: 1950 Selmer Paris Super Balanced Action

  • Mouthpiece(s): Selmer Paris Concept, MeYer G Series

  • Ligature: Rovner Versa

  • Reeds: Hemke - Strength 3, Legere - 2.5

  • Neckstrap: Rico (non-padded)

Recommendations:

Saxophones:

  • Cannonball

  • Selmer Paris

  • Yamaha

  • Yanagisawa

Avoid brands not listed here! Brands such as Legacy, Mendini, or anything else found on Amazon are more akin to saxophone “shaped objects” rather than actual instruments. A common brand you will come across is Jupiter. These instruments have serious issues and are not recommended for either beginning or professional use.

Mouthpieces:

  • D’Addario Reserve (Alto)

  • Selmer Concept (Soprano, Alto, Tenor)

  • Vandoren Optimum (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone)

  • Yamaha 4c (Beginners)

A common mouthpiece is the Selmer Paris S80 C*, for some students this mouthpiece works very well! I find it too buzzy for my personal taste and so I don’t typically recommend it.

Ligatures:

  • Rovner Dark

  • Rovner Versa

  • Vandoren M/O

  • Vandoren Optimum
